syllables of every word against the CMU pronouncing dictionary , and keeps the runs that
fall into 5-7-5 exactly — the found haiku , written by someone who

How it works. Text is normalized and cut at punctuation and line breaks. Each word is
looked up in CMUdict — 126,036 words, syllables counted from the pronunciation itself, not from
the spelling. Words it has never seen fall back to a rules engine that agrees with the dictionary
91.5% of the time; those words are underlined
in the results so you know which numbers are a guess. Numbers are read aloud before counting
(1984 is five syllables). Then it looks for runs of
whole words whose syllables partition exactly into the chosen shape.
Poems that survive the strict rules earn badges — iambic scansion, rhyme, kigo,
lipograms and stranger things — and a shininess : how rare that
combination is, measured against 1.5 million real posts and discounted by word repetition.
Results are ranked shiniest first.
